Your first major stop should be Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro.

Old San Juan can get hot and humid, especially midday. There’s very little shade on the uphill walk, so bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and try to visit El Morro earlier in the day.

Old San Juan is very walkable, but it is also hilly.

If you have mobility concerns, are traveling with young kids, or simply don’t want to do the uphill portion in the heat, you have options.

There are usually taxis available near the port, and there is often a free city trolley that loops through Old San Juan, including stops near the forts. Service can vary, so it’s worth asking when you get off the ship.

One of our favorite strategies is to take a taxi toward El Morro first and then enjoy the slow, scenic walk back toward the cruise ship.

If you want more history, you can also visit Castillo San Cristóbal.

It’s closer to the cruise port and is often less crowded than El Morro. If you only have time for one fort, though, we would choose El Morro for the views and overall experience.

One of the most photographed streets in Old San Juan. Decorations and displays can change throughout the year, but it remains one of the city’s most recognizable streets.

Calle San Sebastián

Lively, colorful, and filled with restaurants, bars, and local shops.

And don’t forget to look down — those blue cobblestones were originally brought over from Spain centuries ago.

A great place to grab a cold beer and a light appetizer. Nice break from the heat and a good casual stop during a walking day.
